I just started getting into reviewing books and came across Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc. I was very excited to have the opportunity to review one of their children’s books that I could read to my daughter.
I looked forward to receiving the book and sharing it with my daughter, until it came in the mail. The cover looked great- nice and colorful. The pages inside, however, were very plain and had absolutely no color. The book was illustrated with pencil drawings. They were nice, but not very attention grabbing for children. The items in the pictures weren’t always scaled to match the size of others so sometimes the fish is really big (bigger than a house!) and sometimes small. I worried about how my 2 year old would react to such a plain book.
The story of the fish was cute. It was about a fish that got lost and wandered around to find where he belonged. He encountered some animals along the way and they all played a part in his search and some helped him out.
I read this book to my daughter at bedtime one night and it seemed to go alright. She told her dad afterwards about the lost fish and the animals that helped it. The next morning, she saw the book and got overly excited about it and wanted to read it again. I was shocked at her joy over a book that seemed so plain.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. It’s a cute story that will entertain children who will want to read it over and over again.
