What happened to going to the library?
I grew up going to the library quite often. My memories actually start when I was about 9+. I had just moved to a new town and I found out about a reading contest at the local library. I LOVED to read and I was thrilled to be involved in the contest. I can’t remember the details of every summers contest, but I do know I won more than once!
I can remember getting ready for a family vacation and stocking up on books to take with me. One year, the day the contest ended, I sat in the library reading and reading more books to add to my list. I didn’t do it just because of the contest, I always loved to read and I still do at the age of 26. *Thanks, Mom!* (My mom alway told me stories of reading to me when I was young. We would have reading time in my parents bed each morning. I constantly asked for more, more, and more! I vaguely remember those days but i’m so thankful for them!
Anyway, when the contests weren’t going on, I still spent a good amount of time at the library. Mainly in the 5th grade up through middle school years is when I spent the most time there. I’d go there to meet a friend or group partner to work on homework for school. It was always a fun time, hanging out with my best friend(s). I enjoyed having that table in the upstairs children’s section, near the rails which gave me a view of the downstairs. I sat there everytime working on my homework, talking to friends, and yes, checking out new books to read for fun!
I have many fond memories of the library in the small town of Rittman, Ohio. I knew all of the librarians and they of course knew me and my friends.
I don’t recall when I stopped going to the library. In High School I went sporadically if I needed the quiet, or their research materials.
I began to use the internet quite often by the end of middle school so I suspect that took over the time at the library. It was definitely nice to be able to research almost everything imaginable while sitting in my house at the computer desk. It was convenient, I didn’t have to worry about closing times, etc.
I was just reading about some free activities on www.toddlers-are-fun.com, a site I somehow stumbled upon after putting my two year old to bed. The author listed the many activities she has taken part in at her local library with her son and I caught myself going down memory lane, something i’ve been doing a lot of lately.
Now I live in a big city and there’s a huge library just 10 minutes from our home. This is not like the typical small branch libraries even closer to home, but it’s basically the size of a museum or large department store. I regret that I don’t go there often enough, and that my daughter has only been there a couple times in her life. Because of tonight, i’m going to be looking into my libraries activities. Even if there’s nothing special for my family, I plan to take my daughter as often as possible. She loves to read and look at books and I hope one day she’ll have fond memories and stories of her mom (and dad) reading to her just as I have from my childhood.

The Akron Library has a ton of things to do for babies through adults! There are toddler story times, weekly movie times, crafts, etc. I’m sure your daughter AND you would love it!
