On Saturday, the night before my birthday, we had a movie night at my brother’s house. My kids and I got home super late. Luckily, before anyone stepped in it, one of the big kids announced that one of the cats had puked. Thanks a lot Fluffy. That’s exactly what I wanted to clean up before going to bed.
My weekend was already not going exactly as I had hoped. That’s just life with kids.
I was turning 34 on Sunday and I had announced that I was going to give myself a full birthday weekend. I was going to go places, I was going to do things. I was going to have a kid free birthday celebration. Then we’d have a family dinner at my favorite restaurant on my actual birthday.
Well, the week leading up to it just went haywire and changed everything.
I didn’t work on Friday, so I went to lunch with a friend at a Mexican restaurant. That was great!
My littlest came home with a runny nose and bad cough (not unusual for him, but yuck, snot.)
Since their Daddy visit was canceled, I then let my big kids have their best friends spend the night.
Saturday, I had the opportunity for my kids to go to their grandparent’s whom they love visiting any chance they get. But it just didn’t happen. We just had a pajama day and when their friends went home, I ordered us some Marco’s pizza. That’s when my sister in law called for our last minute movie night. We grabbed our pizza and went over and had a great time.
After cleaning up the cat puke at about 1am, I was finally able to get to bed. I went to sleep looking forward to the day ahead.
Four or so hours later, my daughter yelled and said she needed me. She had puked. On her bed. All over everything.
Noon rolls around and my boy wakes me up to tell me Grace needs me again. Why? Because she puked. Again. This time, she made it to her bag and there was no cleanup needed. Woohoo!
After getting breakfast ready, I was told the cat had puked again. After cleaning up breakfast and starting some laundry I went to clean it up. Thinking it was just a spot. Nope. Our dear Fluffy had puked from the ledge at the stairs so it went down the wall, on the chair, on the Xbox controller, on a basket of clean laundry, on toys.
So, just a recap. Birthday weekend gone wrong. Snot nosed toddler. Puking, feverish daughter. Cat puked. Twice. No birthday dinner.
I’m grateful that I am able to find the good in most scenarios. Sometimes it can take me a while, I admit that. But today, on my birthday, I was able to tend to some things around the house. I had extra time with my kids! While cleaning the cat puke the second time, I moved a chair and found the missing cable remote! It was missing for an entire week. My littlest was totally blamed.
Also, do you remember me saying that my boy WOKE me up at NOON? I got to sleep in! On my birthday! Yay! 😀
Life throws us all at least a curve ball or two, maybe twenty. It’s easy to pity yourself and allow yourself to be all grumpy about things not going right. (I admit I’m guilty of this!) But it’s so much better to FIND THE POSITIVE in each situation. I promise you that 98% of the time you can find something positive, something to make you SMILE. It just might take cleaning up a lot of puke first. 😀
